Why did pirates eat oranges and lemons? Well, it’s a long story. While pirates were at sea, they commonly developed something called scurvy. What’s scurvy? Scurvy is a disease caused by a vitamin C deficiency. What foods contain vitamin C? Oranges and lemons of course! From this information, you can see that when pirates ate lemons and oranges they got the essential vitamin C they needed and also prevented scurvy.

Oranges are not only tasty, but they provide important vitamins to keep you healthy. Below, I have a recipe that incorporates oranges and other delicious fruits into a refreshing snack – a fruit salad. However, this salad doesn’t have any lettuce. Instead, it has apples, pears, kiwis, blackberries, oranges, and pomegranate seeds.

To start, you will need a lemon, a large bowl, apples, pears, kiwis, oranges, blackberries, and pomegranate seeds. Remember to always wash your fruit before you use it!

Then, you should slice the apples and pears. Peel the kiwis and slice them into thin pieces. Peel the oranges and then remove the thin clear membrane around each slice. Wash off your blackberries and set them aside. Measure out about half a cup of pomegranate seeds and place it in the large bowl with the rest of the prepared fruits, and fold in the blackberries.

Mix all the ingredients together, and slice and squeeze the lemon to distribute the juice on the salad. This step will keep the apples and pears from turning brown.

Finally, enjoy your delicious creation!
